Motorcycle technician schools prepare students to enter the job force as highly trained, highly skilled motorcycle mechanics.   In addition to local colleges that offer certificate and associate degree programs as motorcycle technicians, there are several large nationwide tech schools with locations all across the United States.  Schools such as WyoTech and MMI offer very specialized motorcycle mechanic training and will guide you step by step as to how to become a mechanic.

At the large nationwide schools such as Motorcycle Mechanic Institute (MMI) you will learn on state of the art equipment and gain knowledge of the most current technologies being used by motorcycle manufacturers worldwide.  In fact, most of these schools allow you to specialize on specific brands.  So if you wanted to become only a Harley Davidson mechanic you could easily find a school that would allow you to do that.  Schools also offer specialization in Yamaha, Kawasaki, Honda, Suzuki, or BMW.

Choosing a Motorcycle Technician School

There are many things to consider when choosing a motorcycle technician school.  Probably the most important considerations are cost, time commitment, and job placement.  Attending one of the large national schools can cost anywhere from $20,000 to $30,000 or more depending on the courses you choose to take.  Taking classes at a local college will be significantly cheaper, but you will not be learning on the most up to date equipment, and the course work will be more general in nature.  Time commitment is another huge factor.  If you are working full time and attending classes, it will take you a little longer to complete your motorcycle mechanic training.  Finally, and probably the most important consideration is job placement.  The larger schools will almost certainly be able to help you get your foot in the door of the large motorcycle dealers, and some of the schools offer classes in conjunction with the large motorcycle manufacturers.

Harley Davidson Mechanic School

MMI offers elective courses specifically for those interested in becoming a Harley Davidson Mechanic.  There is a 24 week Harley Davidson motorcycle mechanic course that focuses on late model bikes that is fully supported by Harley Davidson.  In addition to the opportunity to work on the iconic American motorcycles, the course will fully prepare you for employment at a Harley Davidson dealership by teaching you to understand customer skills and shop management techniques.

Honda Pro Technician Routine Maintenance Certificate

If you prefer to work on Honda motorcycles, Motorcycle Mechanic Institute also offers a set of courses that are fully endorsed by Honda to help you earn your Honda Pro Technician Routine Maintenance Certificate.  In addition to Honda Motorcycles, you will learn to work on Scooters, Quads, and Honda Watercraft.  This program is 24 weeks long and because it is supported by Honda, you will get the opportunity to work on the latest models straight from the factory.
