The bad kind.:eek:

I just fired up the truck after the latest bombing run and was bumping the starter to bleed the new power steering cooler (actually the old auto tranny cooler) and I saw this nice warm glow coming from the back of the VE. :eek: As I was on my way to turn off the ignition, I saw a corresponding warm glow coming from the grid heater solenoid area.

It turns out that there was a small retaining tab / washer on the fuel screw. When I pulled the cover off the fuel screw I noticed the little tab, but didn't think anything of it. FYI if it rotates just right it contacts the fuel shutoff solenoid and does a really good job of turning the fusible link into a lamp. The insulation on the fusible links may be fire resistant, but it sure makes a lot of smoke! I got it shut down soon enough that the link still works, but the insulation is split in a couple of places and the wire is discolored.

Do I just tape the split spots since it is still working, or cut it out and replace it? I want to replace it if failure is now imminent, but I also don't want to fix anything else that ain't broke yet. Anybody run a "pre-tested" fusible link like that?
